6/10/2023 0 Comments The dark is rising author![]() Reading them now is both convalescent and critically galvanizing, offering dreamy holiday-tinged nostalgia with one hand while also raising urgent questions about good and evil in our perilous present. And as it turns out, the titular novel and the other four books in the sequence are also spot-on selections for this winter in particular, the Winter of Dystopia 2017 CE. Frigid, familiar, spooky - it was a spot-on choice for a holiday read that wasn’t “merry” at all. I read The Dark is Rising years ago, and although its plot details had faded, I remembered its cataclysmic snowstorm, among other wintery elements. The right book always seems to find me, and did so again earlier this month, when I learned through Twitter of a virtual book club, #TheDarkIsReading, dedicated to Susan Cooper’s beloved novel, The Dark Is Rising. ![]() For me, reading about winter thus became an essential and compulsory corrective to the still-green outdoors as the holidays approached. ![]() When you grow up in Florida, like I did, weirdness is plentiful but winter is scarce. ![]() Sign up for our newsletter to get submission announcements and stay on top of our best work. ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s about keys.Īnd Gingerbread, well, it really is about gingerbread. She wrote her first novel, The Icarus Girl, while still in secondary school her sixth, the collection What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours, won the PEN Open Book Award in 2017. “I was trying to probe gingerbread itself and ask it what it means.” Oyeyemi, who was born in Nigeria and grew up in Lewisham, a neighborhood in South London, now lives in Prague, which, among other things, is home to a gingerbread museum. ![]() “I wanted to have a sensory connection to it,” she told me recently. There was one ill-fated experiment with a clean-eating recipe, which Oyeyemi described as “gingerbread minus the gingerbread.” She tried Emily Dickinson’s own recipe - “my favorite-favorite,” she told me recently - baskets of which Dickinson would lower out her window to the children playing in her family’s gardens below. ![]() She polished off several tins of the famed gingerbread from Grasmere, in the northwest of England, where poet William Wordsworth lived for more than a decade. There was the chewy, dense Yorkshire Parkin, often consumed during Guy Fawkes celebrations, and a crispy, crumbly one, almost like a digestive cookie. Helen Oyeyemi baked, and ate, a lot of gingerbread while writing her sixth novel, Gingerbread. ![]() ![]() ![]() The email contains a discount code for the mass-market paperback effective Tuesday, March 1, one day after Lee’s will was sealed-Hachette has to liquidate its stock, since it will only be able to sell its edition for a limited amount of time, so it’s offering an additional discount for booksellers. Another place people are likely to encounter mass-market paperbacks is in schools, where they are popular due to their low cost. ![]() The most popular mass-market paperback of the last few years is almost certainly the stout paperbacks of George R. ![]() Mass-market paperbacks are smaller and significantly cheaper than trade paperbacks-sometimes called “airport books,” mass-market paperbacks are typically available in non-bookstore retail outlets, like airports and supermarkets. Īccording to the email, which a number of booksellers in multiple states have confirmed that they received a variation of, no other publisher will be able to produce the edition either, meaning there will no longer be a mass-market version of To Kill a Mockingbird available in the United States. ![]() We may never know what Lee’s will stipulates, but the estate’s first action in the wake of Lee’s death is both bold and somewhat baffling: The New Republic has obtained an email from Hachette Book Group, sent on Friday, March 4 to booksellers across the country, revealing that Lee’s estate will no longer allow publication of the mass-market paperback edition of To Kill a Mockingbird. ![]() 6/9/2023 0 Comments The dry harper![]() With this ecocritical framework in mind, this paper analyses the representation of drought, bushfire and the nonhuman in Jane Harper’s The Dry (2016) and Chris Hammer’s Scrublands (2018), and what such texts reveal to readers about the criminal nature of anthropogenic climate change and the settler-colonial destruction of Australian habitats. Such a relationship indirectly alludes to the impact of a changing climate on Australian communities and ecosystems and suggests that popular genre fiction can contribute in profound ways to broader environmental considerations. In this paper, I investigate the idea of Australian crime fiction as a largely underexplored representation of the modern environmental crisis, discussing how modern Australian crime fiction often portrays the troubling relationship between human violence and the settler-colonial decimation of Australia’s natural environments and nonhuman animals. While in recent years Australian crime fiction has gained more attention amongst both academics and reviewers, it is still missing from an area of study in which I believe it demands more notice-that is, ecocritical discussions of Australian fiction. ![]() ![]() ![]() In 1997, Stephen Knight described Australian crime fiction as a genre that is ‘thriving but unnoticed’ (Continent of Mystery 1). ![]() 6/9/2023 0 Comments Anastasia books lois lowry![]() ![]() I grew up on these books, and she was one of the few literary heroines who I really, truly identified with - it wasn't that I wanted to be her, it was that I WAS her.Īs a grown-up, it's rare for realistic fiction about precocious child characters to really work for me - the kids usually fall into the Wise Beyond Their Years category or into the Mondo Precious (In Other Words, Yackworthy) category or into the Supposedly a Child But Actually Just A Mouthpiece for the Author category.
